CUSTOMS REGULATIONS

A) FOREIGNERS: Not holding Thai Passport. Owner needs to have a One-Year Thai Work Permit to be Eligible to import Used Household Goods into Thailand on the Duty-Free basis provided that shipment arrives at Bangkok Port/Airport within six months of owner’s 1st arrival in Thailand on the Thai Non-Immigrant-B Visa.

Without One-Year Thai Work Permit, owner can import only Used Clothes/Books (Classified by Thai Customs as ‘Used Personal Effects’) on the duty-free basis. But all other items (Classified by Thai Customs as ‘Used Household Goods’) such as electrical items, furniture, kitchen ware, and, so on, are subject to full non refundable Import Duties/Taxes although these items are used and not for re-sale. Thai Customs Import Duties/Taxes on household goods items average approximately 30% - 40% of Thai Customs Assessed C.I.F. Value of the taxable items.

B) THAI CITIZENS: Holding Thai Passport. Owner can import Used Household Goods into Thailand on the Duty-Free basis if owner has all the following qualifications:

  • Owner is still holding a Thai Passport including the expired passports. Owner should not pack Any expired passports in the shipment. Owner should hand carry all passports.
  • Owner has been travelling in-and-out of Thailand and in-and-out of the shipment Origin Country by using Thai Passport only.
  • Owner has lived in the shipment Origin Country at least one full year: counting only the time owner actually stayed in the shipment Origin Country.
  • During owner stay in the shipment Origin Country, owner has not come back to Thailand for more than 5 times, and, each time owner did not stay in Thailand for more than 3 months.
  • Owner has some document or stamp in owner passport showing that owner had the residence in the shipment Origin Country: not just staying on the tourist visa.
  • Shipment has to arrive at Bangkok Port/Airport within six months of owner return to Thailand.
  • Owner has never imported any Used Household Goods shipment into Thailand before.

C) DIPLOMATS: Who are posting to their Embassies/U.N. Organizations in Thailand only. AFTER (only after and not before) shipment arrival at Bangkok Port/Airport, owner office in Bangkok has to apply for the Diplomatic Immunity on the shipment to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok. This process normally takes approximately 5 – 10 working days depending on the workload of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After Diplomatic Immunity approval has been received, our Company will take another 2 working days to complete the necessary Customs/Port Formalities, and, clearance. After that, we can deliver shipment to owner residence. Thus, there will be some demurrage costs which are NOT included in our above quoted destination rates.

Other Useful Customs Information

A) Cars and motorcycles are subject to both IMPORT LICENCE and IMPORT DUTIES/TAXES. Import License is extremely difficult to get and can take up to 2 – 4 months to get with all necessary Supporting documents. Cost to get this Import License is US$250. Due to time taken in getting this Import License, normally shipment will arrive at Bangkok prior to the issuance of the Import License. So owner would also have to pay Thai Customs Penalty Fine approximately US$500 for bringing the ‘restricted goods’ prior to the issuance of the Import License. Thai Customs Import Duties/Taxes approximately 200% - 400% of Thai Customs Assessed C.I.F. Values depending on the engine size.

B) Foods and Alcoholic Beverages are subject to both IMPORT LICENCE and IMPORT DUTIES. Import License takes approximately 2 – 3 weeks to get. Cost to get this Import License is US$150. Thai Customs Import Duties/Taxes approximately 100% of Thai Customs Assessed C.I.F. Value.

C) Bicycles and Golf Clubs are not considered by Thai Customs as part of Used Personal Effects and Used Household Goods, and, may be subject to full non-refundable Import Duties/Taxes depending on the Thai Customs Inspectors assigned to the release of the shipment. Some Customs Inspectors would release the bicycles and golf clubs without imposing any Duties/Taxes. But some Customs Inspectors may decide to charge Duties/Taxes on bicycles/golf clubs. Thai Customs Duties/Taxes on bicycles and golf clubs approximately 40% of Thai Customs Assessed C.I.F. Value.

D) Dogs and Cats are subject to Import Permit and Import Duties/Taxes. Import Permit takes approximately 2 weeks to get. Import Duties/Taxes approximately 40% of Thai Customs Assessed C.I.F. Value.

E) PROHIBITED ITEMS: arms, ammunition, dangerous goods, narcotics, medicines, pornographic materials, shortwave radios, and, secondhand electrical goods for commercial purpose.

F) For all goods which are subject to Import License, if somehow Import License cannot be obtained, the goods will be confiscated by Thai Customs. Our company cannot guarantee if the Import License can be obtained. This is totally up to the jurisdiction of the Thai Authorities.
